Sticking a windmill on your roof and getting free electricity seems to be very appealing, but the reality is that the amount of power provided by such small domestic scale turbines doesn’t usually pay back the cost of the installation, and the carbon savings don’t repay the carbon released in the production of the unit either.

Wind power quickly becomes more viable as the scale increases and many farmers and landowners are looking into installations of smaller (25m) wind power systems, and others at more ambitious projects fuelled by the generous feed in tariffs.
